Who is behind the curtain?
Boxes of Tangerines was established in 2021. I often say “it took a pandemic” but truly it has been a long time coming.
At sometime in the last year, I was looking through the many storage containers that have been collecting dust in my basement and I came across one full of childhood memories. This led to hours of sifting, laughing, and crying. It was in that box I came across a standard size Manila folder with “jewelry designs” [spelt incorrectly] scribbled on the top. It was my 4th grade penmanship, and I was immediately transported to the time it was made. I remember sitting in my garage in front of a sewing machine that I was slowly but surely learning to use and daydreaming of all the possibilities the future could hold. Sadly, there were no designs in the folder as I held it in present time, but I was glad to have this physical memory of childhood dreaming.
I was outgoing and creative throughout school.
I found a home in the theatre and achieved a BA in Theatre Arts from Salve Regina University, where I was the first student pursue both acting and technical theatre, specifically costume design. It was during school and my professional work that I continued to fall into the construction of accessories of all kinds, leading me to realize my love of jewelry all over again.
I have always loved fabrics, different textures, and the use of unique materials. For costuming, I would find myself getting lost for hours at a rummage sale, flea market, or thrift shop. Finding treasure gave me a thrill and making something out of (seemingly) nothing set my brain on fire. Plus, finding previously loved materials and giving them new life made my heart happy, as I have always tried to make the planet a sustainable place in my everyday life.
Working with my hands and creating is my passion. I always dreamed of pursuing my own business that brings joy to people’s lives, and lets you into my groovy, eclectic world. I cannot believe it is now my reality. As I continue this journey with Boxes of Tangerines, I hope to make my childhood-self proud…
